Function Description

The automatic slack adjuster sits between the brake chamber push rod and the foundation brake camshaft. On every brake application, the angle the arm rotates through is compared against a reference angle built into the design. If rotation exceeds that angle, the excess is fed through a one-way clutch to the worm gear, and the clearance is closed by one small increment. This maintains proper pushrod stroke and ensures the brake engages at the correct point.

Common Failure Symptoms

Replace this slack adjuster when experiencing:

  • Long brake stroke that does not correct itself
  • Uneven braking between left and right sides of the same axle
  • Grinding noise when backing up the adjuster
  • Vehicle pulls to one side during braking
  • Visible damage to the arm (cracks, deformation, corrosion)
